H1N1 (Swine Flu) at School

The following is a press release from Richmond City Schools:

Positive H1N1 Case Confirmed at a Richmond City School

The Richmond City Health District and Richmond Public Schools have confirmed a case of H1N1 (swine) flu at William Fox Elementary School. The identified student remains out of school and is doing well.

H1N1 influenza symptoms are similar to seasonal flu and typically include fever, cough and sore throat. Additional symptoms may include headache, chills and fatigue. Persons with H1N1 flu are contagious for up to seven days after the onset of illness and possibly longer if they are still symptomatic. Generally, cases of the flu self-resolve and can be treated the same as seasonal flu.

Persons with underlying health conditions and compromised immune systems are at greater risk for more severe illness associated with the H1N1 flu. These persons should call their physician if they become symptomatic.

To help prevent the flu and protect yourself and others, the following prevention guidelines are recommended:

* Stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them
* Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
* Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective
* Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs

As a precautionary measure, all contact surfaces will be cleaned at William Fox Elementary and alcohol-based hand sanitizers will be made available in each classroom for hand washing. The district will continue to follow Richmond City Health District guidance throughout the remainder of the school year.

More information about H1N1 flu is available on the CDC web site at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu and the Virginia Department of Health website at www.vdh.virginia.gov .
